BIG Math Network: Industry Connection Series: Legislative Branch

The Industry Connection Series features interactive panels with mathematical scientists working in industry. The goal is to connect mathematical sciences students directly with industry members who can answer student-generated questions. Students at all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend and ask questions.

The next event is Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, at 3:30pm EST. Panelists will be Dr. Karen Saxe, Senior Vice President of the American Mathematical Society leading the Office of Government Relations, Dr. Courtney Gibbons, AAAS Science and Technology Fellow for the NSF and AAAS STP Fellow with the majority staff of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee of the United States Senate, and Dr. AJ Stewart, policy advisor for the Office of Investment Security at the Department of Treasury.

Event address: Event Closed! Thank you to all who attended!

Dr. Courtney Gibbons is an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow hosted by the National Science Foundation Directorate for Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering, Division of Information and Intelligent Systems where she contributes a mathematical perspective to the AI policy discussions.  Last year, she served as an AAAS STP Fellow with the majority staff of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee of the United States Senate (Chairman Gary C. Peters) where her policy portfolio included federal data governance, artificial intelligence, and federal financial assistance policy.

An elected member of the Executive Committee of the Association for Women in Mathematics, Courtney is the incoming chair of the Government Advocacy. When not working for the US Government, she is an associate professor of mathematics at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY where she joined the faculty in 2013. She earned her BA in mathematics from Colorado College and both her MS and PhD in mathematics, specializing in commutative algebra, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Dr. AJ Stewart is a policy advisor for the Office of Investment Security at the Department of Treasury. His current work involves reviewing foreign investment within the United States for National Security Risk. In 2021, AJ was honored to be the American Mathematical Society Congressional Fellow assigned to the Office of Senator Raphael Warnock where he worked on economic policy. AJ has a background in algebraic geometry, data science, and quantitative justice interested in algorithms, machine learning, applications of mathematics to social justice, and wealth disparity. AJ was raised in Florida but moved to California to complete an undergraduate degree in mathematics at Humboldt State University and then received a Ph. D. from University of Oregon. After graduate school worked at Seattle University. AJ has a passion for connecting mathematics to everyday life and has taught a variety of classes focusing on data science and economics.

Dr. Karen Saxe would like to direct students’ attention to the AMS CASE fellowship: https://www.ams.org/government/dc-case-fellowship

“The CASE Workshop introduces STEM students to the federal policy-making process, and empowers them to become advocates for basic research throughout their careers…
Sponsorship eligibility requirements:  Students must be an AMS student member or enrolled full-time in an undergraduate (preferably an upper classman) or graduate degree program in the mathematical sciences at an AMS member institution. Students from foreign countries are eligible if studying here in the United States.

Dr. Saxe intends to discuss this fellowship as part of the panel. The fellowship application is due on February 18th and is a great opportunity for students.
