The Industry Connection Series features interactive panels with
mathematical scientists working in industry. The goal is to connect
mathematical sciences students directly with industry members who can
answer student-generated questions. Students at all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend and ask questions.
The next event is Monday, March 24th, 2025, at 4:00 PM EST, focusing on connecting students to professionals who work in National Laboratories. Panelists will be Sven Leyffer, Jennifer Loe, and Emilie Purvine.
Dr. Jennifer Loe earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Baylor University, where she specialized in numerical linear algebra. She joined Sandia National Laboratories in January 2020 and has since contributed to advancements in high-performance computing, remote sensing, and cybersecurity. Her current work includes developing graph algorithms for large-scale data analysis. Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Loe enjoys visiting the zoo and aquarium, speaking in Toastmasters, and supporting children and teens in foster care.
Dr. Emilie Purvine is a Chief Data Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Team Lead for the Complex Data Models team. Her academic background is in pure mathematics, with a bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin – Madison and a PhD from Rutgers University where she studied enumerative combinatorics and discrete dynamics. Her research since joining PNNL in 2011 has focused on applications of combinatorics and computational topology together with theoretical advances needed to support the applications. Over her time at PNNL Emilie has been both principal investigator and technical staff on a number of projects in applications ranging from computational chemistry and biology to cyber security and power grid modeling. Her current research uses complex mathematical models to develop cyber analytics, study machine learning models for interpretability, and enhance digital biosecurity.
